It's kind of like VHS and Beta.
Because typewriters tended to get jammed if one typed too quickly, the QWERTY keyboard was designed to be as inefficient as possible. The keys are positioned so that few words can be typed on the home row and the left hand gets the majority of the work.
The DVORAK keyboard, improves efficiency by at least 70%, but, of course, the better setup never caught on.
The Dvorak layout is awesome. I’ve been using it for years, I can type so much better than I used to.
